David G Massey

April 5, 2018

David Glenn Massey, age 71, of Morganville/Wickatunk, New Jersey, passed away on April 5, 2018 of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, April 16, 2018 at St. Clement's RC Church in Matawan, New Jersey. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 15, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (with a memorial service at 4 p.m.), and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Hegarty and Scalia Funeral Home in Old Bridge, New Jersey. David was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 22, 1946. He received his Bachelor Degree from Nyack College and Masters from NYU in New York, and his Ph.D. in English Literature from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. David married Joan McManus-Massey on November 29, 1986, and they were happily married for 31 years. After a brief stint as a skilled apprentice machinist, David followed his desire to be a pastor, starting as a Youth Pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Flushing in Queens, New York. He then transitioned to corporate America where he led a team of professionals and consultants in the development of technical documentation and system software supporting AT&T, Quotron, Citicorp, and Telcordia products and services. While David excelled in the corporate arena, his true desire was to work with his hands and see the fruits of his labor as he had in the machine shop. In 1996 he opened his own business, Online Design Associates (O'DAY), focused on designing, engineering and creating stonework for home landscape. David loved poetry and literature, writing his dissertation on the novels of Willa Cather. He was passionate about music. He spent endless hours perfecting his skills on the bass guitar while jamming to the music of Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, the Eagles and other musicians. Many of his favorite moments at home were playing guitar accompanied by the piano and the singing of his friends and family. Family and friends were the center of David's life. Nothing could replace the joy he felt when his children, Erin Livermore and Sean Massey were born. His heart was full and his smiles were broad. He was enormously proud of all they have done and continue to accomplish in their lives. David was also avid baseball fan and enjoyed sitting with Sean and Aunt Bonnie watching and commenting on the plays and strategies of the New York Yankees. This was only topped when watching Sean hit long home runs on the softball fields of Pennsylvania. David is survived by his loving wife Joan McManus-Massey; his wonderful children Sean and his wife Krystal Massey, Erin and her husband Doug, and grandchildren MacKenzie and Addison Livermore; his siblings Paul and his wife Joan Massey and family; Carol and her husband Ray Clary and family; his in-laws Douglas and Bonnie McManus and family; and other loving family and friends. David is preceded in death by his parents Homer and Catherine Massey. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be in David Massey's name to Rutger's Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Please make check payable to CINJ-RUF and mail to: CINJ Development Office, 120 Albany Street Plaza, Suite 305, New Brunswick, NJ 08901. Donations can also be made online at cinj.org/giving. Kindly indicate that the gift is in memory of David Massey.
