Jack J. Becaccio
July 30, 2016
Jack J. Becaccio, 72 Retired police sergeant Jack J. Becaccio, a lifelong Staten Islander, succumbed to his injuries sustained in an automobile accident that occurred one month ago. Jack was the loving husband of Margaret (Peggy) Becaccio (nee Toto). They had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 18, 2016. Born in Saint Vincent's Hospital, Staten Island, Jack was the son of Margaret and James. He graduated from New Dorp High School in 1962 and embarked on a United States Navy tour in active duty for two years, remaining in the Naval Reserve until 1965. Jack joined the NYPD immediately after getting married, and retired as a sergeant from the OCCB unit in 1985. After retirement Jack continued his investigative career as a special investigator for the State of Florida, investigative manager for Reliance Insurance, and finally as a special frauds investigator for the major case unit of the New York State Department of Insurance Fraud. Jack received degrees from both The College of Staten Island and John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He was also a graduate of the 140th session of The Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy. Jack was best known for his quick wit, and opinionated stance on everything from baseball to politics. An avid Yankees and Giants fan, Jack could be seen as well as heard, watching his favorite teams. Golf became a passion, and his days on the links with his buddies were cherished. A true collector at heart, Jack collected everything from trains to movie memorabilia and his passion was contagious whenever he had the opportunity to show off his "geekatorium." Nothing was more important than family, and this tight bond began when he met his soon-to-be wife at a party in 1961. Upon first sight, Jack told his best friends, Bobby, Carmine and Ronny, that he just met his future wife. They soon became high school sweethearts and remained at each other's sides every day since. In an open letter to his wife, Peggy, on his anniversary, Jack read that "being married to the love of my life has been the dream of a lifetime and a privilege beyond words." "My husband will be dearly missed. He touched the lives of everyone who knew him. He was the strongest, most caring and loving man I've ever known and I adore him. He was my life partner and my best friend," his wife Peggy said. The loving father of Tracey Viverito and Jack James Becaccio, Jack beamed when speaking of either his son's NYPD career or his daughter's children. Being a grandfather came naturally and Jack also wrote that "Tracey and Jason have blessed us with three magnificent granddaughters, Olivia, Isabella and Ava. They all have stolen our hearts and I couldn't imagine life without them." Jack is also survived by his sister, Peggy Macula, and was predeceased by another sister, Ginny Peterson. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
