Leo Goldstein
December 21, 2015
Goldstein, Leo 91- of Galloway passed away on December 21, 2015. He was born in Manhattan and raised in the Bronx. Leo was the son of a German father Max Goldstein and Austrian mother Irene Berger. Leo graduated from Columbia University with a PhD in Psychology, working as a Research Associate at the Institute for Development Studies and as an Assistant Research Professor at New York Medical College. Leo's research regarding the development of a young child's imagination through educational play laid an instrumental foundation for President Lyndon B. Johnson's support of the "Head Start" program in 1965. Serving in the Army during World War II, Leo deciphered and communicated via Morse Code while stationed in Galena, Alaska. He won the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Leo was a lover of books and the game scrabble. His talented dance moves (The Viennese Waltz was his favorite) were enjoyed by his devoted and dear daughter Sue, and his dance partners at Spring Village's Dance Hall, Saturday nights. This gentle man always animated the joys of life; he was so agreeable and content and had a smile you couldn't help but duplicate when you were in his presence. He was predeceased by his wife Frances L. Goldstein. He is survived by beloved daughter Sue Feinberg ( Bryan); granddaughter Dana Feinberg; niece Irene (Mark); grandnieces and nephews Aaron, Rachel and Max. Arrangements by Lowenstein-Saraceno Funeral Home, Galloway. Private graveside service.
